Culture Over Concrete: Why We Decided to Sell our Office Space

The Greek Philosopher Heraclitus famously said ‘Life is Flux’ or simply put, the only constant in life is change. Just when you start to feel comfortable or find a groove, along comes a little chaos to shake it all up again.

The universe has been breathing a lot of new energy into Conscious Brands over the past couple of months, and thankfully, that energy has been largely welcome and accepted by the CB team. That’s not to say it’s been a walk in the park – change is almost always disruptive, but adjusting your mindset from one of fear to one of eager anticipation can make a huge difference.

A few people have reached out asking why we have decided to sell the Conscious Brands Collaboratorium (our East Village loft and primary office space.) The Collaboratorium officially went on the market last month, and though the perception of this may be one of instability, we assure you, Conscious Brands is doing well!

As our lives shift, so has our need for a traditional brick and mortar space. Our team is spread out from coast to coast- spanning three provinces with close to 6,000 kilometres of land between us. More often than not, we find ourselves working online and utilizing technology to keep connected. Welcoming flexible working conditions has left us with a space that is being occupied less than 30% of the time; ultimately, it no longer made sense to hold on to it.

By letting go of our under-utilized space, we are able to free up a significant amount of funds that can now be allocated to expanding our Conscious Brands’ internal culture and freeing us up for more face-to-face team building time together. It also allows us the opportunity for collaboration with other groups and organizations by exploring co-working spaces, and when needed, renting out (and helping to energize) other under-utilized spaces in our community.

From a sustainability standpoint, letting go of our office allows us to reduce our emissions output – no longer are we heating, powering and buying supplies to keep the loft stocked up and usable. Having our team work remotely cuts down significantly on time spent traveling to and from the office, which in turn boosts overall productivity and frees us up for more non-work commitments (though we will miss those beautiful bike commutes!) Putting culture ahead of concrete – all big wins in our books.

Conscious Brands has always believed that in order to remain relevant, you have to be able to shift, adapt and respond proactively. After a lot of soul-searching, we want to be bold and lead with our hearts – fully embracing our vision of harmony – a flourishing, responsive and regenerative economy – by ensuring we are always moving toward and actively living those ideals.
