On the heels of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, today is Giving Tuesday – a day of global movement encouraging people to give back during the holidays- to foster our local community and organizations doing meaningful work by donating, raising funds, carrying out random acts of kindness, volunteering for a cause we care about or using the power of our voice to spread an important message.
It’s a simple idea. Whether you do something on your own, or rally together with your family, your community, your company or your organization, find a way to give back and then share your idea.
If you are looking to make a donation, but aren’t sure where to start, Canada Helps is a great resource. You can search and filter registered charities by location or cause, and batch together donations to several charities in one single transaction. (Canada Helps is a registered charity themselves, with a mission to promote and increase charitable giving in Canada. Because they are a non-profit, their fees are typically half that of the for-profit alternatives.)
If a gift of your time is more what you had in mind, Volunteer Canada can connecting you with local organizations in need of a helping hand. It may be a little late to get out and actually volunteer today, but you can spend the day sourcing an organization and secure a time to help out in the future.
Random acts of kindness can also go a long way- if you are feeling inspired to get out and do something more hands-on, this list of 101 random acts of kindnessmight be just the thing you need to get the creative juices flowing.
Whatever you decide, taking a moment to think about the impact our time and dollars can have on the community around us is a valuable reflection.
