For most of us, we probably conjure up the notion of balance, cooperation or tranquillity. When we think of harmony in our everyday life, we imagine a utopic place where stress or tension are more even-keeled and most elements feel in balance. A space where work and play coexist peacefully and everything feels like ‘just enough.’ It’s a beautiful vision, isn’t it?
One of our guiding principles at Conscious Brands is ‘how you do anything is how you do everything’ so this month, we want to focus on ways in which we can bring more harmony to our every day lives. Working to capture or gain better balance in our work/life, and making strides to create a world that feels like ‘just enough’ more often than not.
APRIL’S TOP 5 HIGH VIBES
1 – SOMETHING GREAT || TIPS FOR EXPONENTIAL LEADERSHIP
Most of us have heard of Arianna Huffington. She is a well-respected entrepreneur and founder of the Huffington Post, a news platform with millions of readers per month (which, in 2011, was acquired by AOL for $315 million.)
Most recently, Arianna started a new company called Thrive Global to help entrepreneurs and individuals make their lives more sane, meaningful and productive. As part of the Abundance 360 CEO Summit, Arianna got together with Peter Diamandis to share her ten best practices for leaders in exponential times.
Some of Arianna’s suggestions include:
Allowing time to renew yourself (the only way for you to be your most productive, effective, and creative self)
Doing entry interviews with your team (not waiting for exit interviews to find out how you can better support your staff)
Getting more sleep (RAND Corporation estimates that sleep deprivation costs us $411 billion per year in lost productivity)
Not calling it ‘Slowing Down’ (If you define these strategies as ‘slowing down,’ you are never going to do them)
Making leadership meetings device-free (it could be as simple as creating a policy around the notion: ‘If you have something more important to do, don’t come to the meeting’)
Definitely ideas we can all get behind! You can read the full article and all of Arianna’s 10 tips here.
2 – A CALL TO ACTION || 30×30 NATURE CHALLENGE
Most of us spend too much time in front of screens and too little time outdoors. It’s time to fall (back) in love with nature for the sake of our health and mental well-being.
Want to join us? You can register yourself, your office or your school online and receive a downloadable toolkit, tips and encouragement throughout the month. You can also share your 30 minutes of nature daily on social media using the hashtag #30x30Challenge.
3 – A MOMENT OF DELIGHT || POMODORO + GIGGLES
We are big fans of the Pomodoro Technique here at CB. If you have never heard of Pomodoro before, the gist is:
Set a timer for 25 minutes
Work really hard for said 25 minutes
When the timer goes off, take a 5 minute break – get up, stretch, walk around, get a glass of water, turn your brain off of hyper-focused work mode, exhale.
Pomodoro is a simple and effective way to beat procrastination and is proven to help boost your overall productivity.
We also believe that laughter is truly the best medicine, so for today, we propose trying the Pomodoro Technique and using a 5 minute break to stretch and have a few giggles watching this video-
4 – A MOMENT FOR YOURSELF || FOREST BATHING
Shinrin-Yoku (which in English loosely translates to ‘forest bathing’) is a Japanese practice of being in the presence of trees. Since 2004, the Japanese government has been studying the physiological and psychological effects of forest bathing and have discovered a huge range of scientifically proven benefits- boosting the immune system, reducing cancer risks, decreasing stress, lowering blood pressure, improving mental health and an increased overall sense of wellness- the list is a significant one.
So in case you needed even more motivation to get outside and take part in the 30×30 nature challenge this month, have a little read and then go find yourself some trees to snuggle up with.
5 – WHAT’S HAPPENING AT CB?
We kicked off the month with an awesome trip to the CHFA West trade show in Vancouver. In addition to reconnecting with some great friends, both old and new, the CB team had a chance to all be in the same place at the same time, allowing for some great connection and bonding time (something that sadly doesn’t happen enough.) We also facilitated a wonderful workshop with some of the natural food industry’s brightest and most inspiring thought-leaders- the conversation and takeaways have us reeling and looking forward to some bold next steps.
We also hosted a webinar/virtual dialogue, continuing the discussion started at our workshop at Expo West in Anaheim last month- ‘Co-creating an industry of Conscious Companies.’ Despite several last minute cancellations, our conversation was a truly beneficial one. We fostered the beginnings of some wonderful new connections and are looking forward to seeing where this dialogue goes.
We had an awesome time at the Energy Futures Lab showcase. Innovators and influencers gathered for meaningful conversations around the “radical middle” narrative of Alberta’s energy space. (And Matt got to spend some time with Calgary’s Mayor, Naheed Nenshi, showing him The Newtonian Shift – A game that The Natural Step uses with the Energy Futures Lab to simulate 20 years of energy transition in 6hrs.)
